Lathes probably are used to make more things than you realize. Many things can be formed with a lathe machine, from wood bowls, to metal screws and poles. What makes different lathes be able to make different things is the machinery equipment being used at the time. Different accessory pieces can dramatically alter the shape of the material being formed by a lathe.

The use of the lathe started many years ago. There is definite evidence that Egyptians used lathes, but it is not known if they were the first inventors of the lathe machine. Their lathes were wood lathes, and were not very effective until they invented the two-person design. Later on, the Romans improved on the Egyptian design by adding a bow to the lathe, to make it turn angles better. It wasn't until the Middle Ages that people figured out a way to run the lathe without using any hands. They created the pedal operated lathe. This style of lathe is actually still in use as the spring pole lathe. In the 1800's there was a return to the two-person lathe, but this time around they were much bigger. The lathe had a great influence on the Industrial revolution. This is when the machinery equipment of motors were added, and the ability to work with metal though a lathe machine. In recent years, lathes are now mostly run by computers, for maximum delicacy and accuracy in work performance.

What makes up a lathe is its machinery equipment. The most basic form of lathe is what all more complicated lathes are based on. The basic shape of a lathe is this: a spindle and clamp are set on a lathe bed, and the material is placed between them. Pressure is applied while the object is spinning, and that makes the different shapes. Lathe accessories can change what kind of items can be made. There are a lot of different kinds of lathes, so of which are: brake lathes, wood lathes, metal lathes, glass lathes, CNC lathes, jewel maker's lathes, bench lathes, and more. Computer operated lathes are called CNC lathes, and these are most often used in a lathe mill or a CNC mill. Lathes are necessary for the production of things that make up a lot of the items in every day life. This makes them very important. Lathes are also important for farm machinery.

So that is a brief overview of lathes and the machinery equipment that they use. There are many different types of lathe machinery, and they all do something different. It is really amazing that something so old is still used today. The lathe is a pretty cool invention.
