The use of the lathe started a very long time ago. It is still used today because it is such a useful tool for making different kinds of crafted materials. Things such as metal screws and wood bowls can be made with a lathe. What changes the design of what the lathe machine makes is different machinery equipment. This alters what comes out in the end.

The use of the lathe started many years ago. There is definite evidence that Egyptians used lathes, but it is not known if they were the first inventors of the lathe machine. Their lathes were wood lathes, and were not very effective until they invented the two-person design. Later on, the Romans improved on the Egyptian design by adding a bow to the lathe, to make it turn angles better. It wasn't until the Middle Ages that people figured out a way to run the lathe without using any hands. They created the pedal operated lathe. This style of lathe is actually still in use as the spring pole lathe. In the 1800's there was a return to the two-person lathe, but this time around they were much bigger. The lathe had a great influence on the Industrial revolution. This is when the machinery equipment of motors were added, and the ability to work with metal though a lathe machine. In recent years, lathes are now mostly run by computers, for maximum delicacy and accuracy in work performance.

There are many different machinery equipment pieces that go into making a lathe. First there is the basic lathe set-up, where there is space to hold the item being formed in a clamp, and a spindle where the object is being held. Some lathes are very small, and others are very large. Then there are the different lathe accessories that modify what the lathe can do. These vary on the different types of lathes. Some of the most basic lathe types are wood lathes, metal lathes, brake lathes, glass lathes, jewel maker's lathes, bench lathes, and many others. The computer generated lathes are called CNC lathes. These are often used together in factories, or in a lathe mill, or CNC mill. The main thing that the accessories do for the lathes is to allow different shapes to be made, and different designs to be followed. Without different accessories, it would be impossible to make very many different shapes. Some of the shapes made on lathes are very important for other machinery pieces that make vital equipment for many different processes necessary for common items that people use everyday. Lathes are particularly used for farm machinery, and they help make farm jobs easier as well.

So that is a brief overview of lathes and the machinery equipment that they use. There are many different types of lathe machinery, and they all do something different. It is really amazing that something so old is still used today. The lathe is a pretty cool invention.
